Dr. Nancy Foster Scholarship Program

Category Details

Program Description:

The Dr. Nancy Foster Scholarship Program provides support for outstanding scholarship and encourages independent graduate-level research in oceanography, marine biology, or maritime archaeology, particularly by women and members of minority groups.

Application Deadlines:

The 2007/2008 application process begins on December 1, 2006. All applications must be received by February 9, 2007 no later than 5:00 p.m. Eastern standard Time.

Award:

For the 2007-2008 academic year, Dr. Nancy Foster Scholarships provide support of up to $32,000: a 12-month stipend of $20,000, in addition to an annual cost-of-education allowance of up to $12,000. A maximum of $64,000 may be provided to masters students (up to two years of support) and up to $128,000 may be provided to doctoral students (up to four years of support).  The annual stipend is paid directly to the scholar.

NOAA Graduate Sciences Program

Category Details

Program Description:

The Graduate Sciences Program (GSP) is aimed primarily at increasing opportunities for students in NOAA-related fields to pursue research and educational training in atmospheric, environmental, remote sensing and oceanic sciences at minority serving institutions (MSI) when possible.  The GSP offers at least two years of NOAA-related research and training opportunities. 

The program's primary objective is to provide college graduates with degrees in math, science, economics, law, social science, and engineering entry-level employment and hands-on research and work experience at NOAA.

The program is designed to improve NOAA's outreach and recruitment efforts of under-represented individuals in the scientific mission-related occupational fields, i.e., fishery biology, environmental law, meteorology, cartography, oceanography, hydrology, computer science, environmental economics, and engineering.

Application Deadlines:

October 1 – January 31 Annually

Award:

640 hours paid employment, full tuition, housing allowance, meal allowance, travel

Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarships Program

Category Details

Program Description:

The purpose of the Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship Program is to: (1) increase undergraduate training in oceanic and atmospheric science, research, technology, and education and foster multidisciplinary training opportunities; 2) to increase public understanding and support for stewardship of the ocean and atmosphere and improve environmental literacy; 3) to recruit and prepare students for public service careers with NOAA.

Application Deadlines:

February 9th - Annually

Award:

Awards include academic assistance (up to a maximum of $8,000 per year) for full-time study during the 9-month academic year; a 10-week, full-time internship position ($650/week) during the summer at a NOAA facility; and, if reappointed, academic assistance (up to a maximum of $8,000) for full-time study during a second 9-month academic year.

Undergraduate Scholarship Program

Category Details

Program Description:

The goal of this program is to increase the number of students who undertake course work and graduate with degrees in the targeted areas integral to NOAA's mission.  This program targets students who have completed their sophomore or junior year, attending Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs), and have recently declared, or about to declare a major in atmosphere, oceanic, or environmental science disciplines.

October 1, thru January 31 - Annually

Award:

 

  • 2 Year award period
  • Summer Internships -- Scholars select and are placed at NOAA offices and sites for 10-week paid summer internships.
  • Scholarships -- Scholars will receive a scholarship of $650/week during the summer internship periods.
  • Travel -- Scholars' travel costs to and from the NOAA sites will be covered.
  • Tuition/Fee Assistance -- A maximum of $4,000 per academic year is provided to each scholar to cover the cost of actual tuition and fees and other allowable expenses approved by the program sponsor.
  • Housing Subsidy -- Students who do not live at home during the summer internship periods will receive additional funding.
