Summary

NOAA’s Office of Education and the and the NOAA Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL) in partnership with the Fiske Planetarium and Science Center hosted a workshop for the NOAA Science On a Sphere Users Collaborative Network. This was the third such workshop. You can view the reports from the two previous workshops here

The workshop took place in Boulder, CO on November 17-19, 2009. The workshop was designed to bring together the diverse group of institutions that have NOAA’s Science On a Sphere (SOS) system on public display to collaborate and create best practices on the educational uses of the sphere.

There were 91 participants in attendance representing 39 different organizations, including informal science centers, federal, agencies, universities, formal education programs, and exhibit and visualization specialists.  The participants included representatives from nearly every NOAA line office, three federal agencies (Department of Energy, NASA, NOAA), and four different countries (United States, Finland, Korea, Mexico).

Major outcomes from the workshop include: sharing and discussion of content for SOS that was recently created or is in the process of being created; revision of guidelines for creating content, initial findings of SOS program-wide evaluation presented to the Network; presentation of latest updates to the technical system and the dataset library; discussion of new technologies available or forthcoming for improving user interactivity with the system;  best practices for integrating K-16 education programming shared; and initial best practices for docent presentations on SOS developed.  You can view the goals and objectives for the workshop for more detail about the intended outcomes.

If you have any questions about the workshop you can contact John McLaughlin of NOAA's Office of Education at John.McLaughlin@noaa.gov.
