NOAA's SOS Users Collaborative Network Workshop Report
July 29-31, 2008
Honolulu and Hilo, HI

Summary
NOAA's Office of Education in partnership with the NOAA Pacific Services Center (PSC), Bishop Museum, and the 'Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawai'i hosted a workshop for the NOAA SOS Users Collaborative Network. The workshop took place in Hawaii on July 29-31, 2008. The workshop was designed to facilitate the continuation of the work done by the network to optimize utilization of spherical display systems to provide educational messages to informal science audiences. Spherical display systems are sphere-shaped "screens" onto which global data and other imagery can be shown.
The workshop included demonstrations at two exhibits that feature NOAA's Science On a Sphere (SOS) system: the first at the Bishop Museum where the first two days of the workshop were held, and the second at the 'Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawai'i, the venue for the third day of the workshop. There were 68 participants in attendance representing 30 different organizations, including informal science centers, federal, agencies, universities, and exhibit and visualization specialists.
This workshop report contains materials associated with the workshop, all of the presentations that were given during the workshop, and summary notes for each workshop session. The materials that apply to the entire workshop are presented first, followed by the presentations and notes which are presented according to the order of the workshop sessions. You can also find logisitical information that was available leading up to this workshop here.
This was the second such workshop, the first of which took place in Baltimore, MD on January 22-24th, 2007. You can view the report from that first workshop here. You can learn more about NOAA's Science On a Sphere from the program Web site at: www.sos.noaa.gov.
If you have any questions about the workshop you can contact John McLaughlin of NOAA's Office of Education at John.McLaughlin@noaa.gov.
