NOAA Workforce Recruitment Program (WRP)

Program Description:

The Workforce Recruitment Program (WRP) for College Students with Disabilities is a resource to connect public and private sector employers nationwide with highly motivated postsecondary students and recent graduates with disabilities who are eager to prove their abilities in the workforce. Employers seek to fill both temporary and permanent positions in a variety of fields.

Myths, stereotypes, and misconceptions about people with disabilities often stand in the way when people with disabilities look for jobs, resulting in a high rate of unemployment. Statistics show that people with disabilities from minority backgrounds encounter even greater difficulty in obtaining work. The WRP aims to eliminate this workplace discrimination one student, one employer, and one job at a time.

Application Deadlines:

The WRP operates on the following timeline:

  • By mid-September, the schedule of recruitment visits to schools is confirmed.
  • From late January through the end of February, recruitment visits, which include 30-minute personal interviews with individual students, are conducted.
  • By late March, a data base composed of student information gathered during recruitment visits is made available to employers in the public and private sectors.
  • Once the data base is released, interested employers make direct contact with students about temporary and permanent job offers. The data base is active for one year.

Award:

Temporary and permanent employment

Dates of Opportunity:

On-going

Population Dynamics Recruiting Program - Undergraduate Workshop

Program Description:

The Population Dynamics Recruiting Program (PDRP) was developed to increase the number of highly qualified applicants for population dynamics positions with the Southeast Fisheries Science Center .

A combination of two factors led to the need for this program:

1) the wave of upcoming retirements at natural resource agencies across the country, and
2) the decline in university natural resource program enrollments.

The PDRP provides unique opportunities for top undergraduate students in the southeastern U.S. to learn about the field of marine resources population dynamics first-hand, all expenses paid, from some of the top experts in the field.

Students interested must enter the PDRP through a one week Undergraduate Workshop, held in early January, each year, in the Florida Keys . The highly competitive application process seeks students with a strong quantitative background and a basic understanding of ecology.

The second phase of the PDRP is the Summer Program where 4-8 of the top, PDRP Workshop participants spend part of their summers learning about current, important marine resource issues. A key part of the summer program is a two week tour where students meet with key university and agency scientists, managers, and policymakers to learn about the issues. The end product of the summer program is a student-developed, web-based case study which can be used in classrooms around the world to illustrate the complexity of the issues studied by the students.

The top students participating in the summer program are offered M.S. Graduate Assistantships with the NMFS RTR Unit at Virginia Tech, as funding allows. Students selected conduct research on a marine resource population dynamics issue of consequence to the Southeast Fisheries Science Center under the supervision of Virginia Tech faculty and NMFS scientists. The RTR Unit maintains excellent relationships with many other top southeastern universities including the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, the University of Miami, and Louisiana State University, among others, where outstanding students are also referred.

This is the first program of its kind in the country. For undergraduate students potentially interested in combining their interests in math, computers, ecology, and conservation, this program provides a tremendous opportunity to explore potential graduate school and career opportunities.

Application Deadlines:

Applications accepted by October 15, 2008

Award:

All expenses will be paid for students selected; including travel, housing, supplies, etc.

Population Dynamics Recruiting Summer Program

Program Description:

The Population Dynamics Recruiting Program (PDRP) now offers a new summer opportunity for undergraduate students, unlike any other in the country. Students learn about a current, important marine resource case study by meeting with the university and agency researchers, managers, stakeholders, and policymakers involved during visits to the universities, marine institutes, and agencies where they work. The 4-6 week program involves only 4-8 top undergraduate students, all who must have previously participated in a PDRP Undergraduate Workshop.

Students are responsible for learning the background of their issue, developing questions for the individuals they'll meet, and ultimately developing multimedia Case Study Websites based integrating all that they've learned. Students who participate learn about marine resources from the people involved at the locations that are impacted by the issue. The students go wherever they need, to understand the issue whether its visiting sports fishermen on a charter boat or meeting with field biologists on a sea turtle nesting beach.

The resulting case studies are then available for use in classrooms across the world, providing opportunities for the summer program students to share what they've learned. The students have to work incredibly hard to meet their deadlines, but along the way, they also have a great time, building new, long-term friendships.

The top students participating in the Summer Program may be offered Graduate Research Assistantships with the National Marine Fisheries Service - Recruiting, Training, Research Program (NMFS RTR) at Virginia Tech. The Program can also refer students to other top graduate programs in the southeastern U.S.

Application Deadlines:

Applications available to students who have participated in the Undergraduate Workshop.
