Last updated June 10, 2009

The NOAA Office of Education (OEd) issued a request for applications to support education projects designed to engage the public in activities that increase ocean and/or climate literacy and the adoption of a stewardship ethic. This funding opportunity closed on June 9, 2009. Applications are currently being reviewed. It is anticipated that recommendations for funding under this announcement will be made by August 28, 2009. Applicants will be contacted after funding decisions are made.

Funded projects will be between one and five years in duration and will support ocean education projects led by eligible applicants. Eligible applicants were only 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations that are either (1) aquariums accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) or (2) have a legally sanctioned affiliation with an AZA-accredited aquarium. Organizations that do not meet these eligibility criteria were allowed to be partners on projects with the eligible applicant as the lead institution.

You can view the Federal Funding Opportunity (FFO) for details on this funding opportunity.

NOAA's Environmental Literacy Grants: Science On a Sphere Network Capacity Building

Last updated February 26, 2009

The NOAA Office of Education (OEd) issued a request for applications for projects designed to build capacity within NOAA’s Science On a Sphere (SOS) Users Collaborative Network (Network) to enhance the educational use of spherical display systems as public exhibits. This funding opportunity closed on February 19, 2009. Applications are currently being reviewed. It is anticipated that recommendations for funding under this announcement will be made by May 29, 2009. Applicants will be contacted after funding decisions are made.

It was required that the Principal Investigator (PI) for any application submitted to this opportunity be affiliated with a Network member institution. Members of the Network are those institutions that have received funding from NOAA related to spherical display systems or have purchased NOAA’s SOS system to display in a public education setting. More information on the Network and an up-to-date list of members is available at: http://www.oesd.noaa.gov/network. You can download a FFO in PDF format. For further information please read our Frequently Asked Questions page and previous funding opportunities related to this current announcement that were offered in 2007.

NOAA's Bay Watershed Education and Training (B-WET) Program in New England, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Pacific Northwest
Funding Opportunity Number: SEC-OED-2009-2001648

Last updated January 26, 2009

The solicitation for proposals has now closed. NOAA B-WET provides grants in support of locally relevant experiential learning through meaningful watershed educational experiences in the K-12 environment. Funded projects will provide meaningful watershed educational experiences for students and related professional development for teachers in support of regional education and environmental priorities in the Pacific Northwest, the northern Gulf of Mexico and New England. These geographic areas build on the successes of the B-WET Programs in the Chesapeake Bay, California, and Hawai'i. Annual project funding ranges from $50,000-$100,000.

See the Federal Funding Opportunity (FFO) for details.

Environmental Literacy Grants for K-12 Education Funding Opportunity Number: SEC-OED-2009-2001282

Last updated July 3, 2008

The solicitation for proposals has now closed. NOAA's Office of Education (OED) is currently reviewing the full applications for environmental literacy projects in support of K-12 education. Funded projects will be between 1 and 5 years in duration and will promote changes in K-12 education to expand the amount of Earth System Science taught in the classroom and improve student learning and application of that subject. Successful projects will catalyze change in K-12 education through development of new programs and materials and/or revision of existing programs and materials and/or by supporting transformative methods that expand or lead to the expansion of the use of Earth System Science in K-12 classrooms. Successful projects will not just increase knowledge of scientific phenomena but will also provide opportunities for the application of that knowledge to environmental issues relevant to the target audience. Projects are encouraged to incorporate NOAA data, data visualizations, and resources and to further the use of Earth System Science concepts related to NOAA's mission goals. Projects are also encouraged to collaborate with NOAA entities as partners and/or connect to projects previously funded by NOAA's Environmental Literacy Grants. A list of previously funded projects is available at http://www.oesd.noaa.gov/elg_projects.html. It is anticipated that final recommendations for funding under this announcement will be made by September 15, 2008, and that projects funded under this announcement will have a start date no earlier than November 1, 2008.

See the Federal Funding Opportunity (FFO) for details. The FFO is available from http://www.grants.gov (Funding Opportunity Number SEC-OED-2009-2001282).  You can also download a version of the FFO that contains additional formatting for increased readability in PDF format. Please read the FFO and visit our FAQ website http://www.oesd.noaa.gov/elg_faqs.html before contacting the Office of Education.
