Education Funding Opportunities

Funding Available Through NOAA's Bay Watershed Education and Training (B-WET) Program
Funding Opportunity Number: SEC-OED-2008-2001368

Last updated April 11, 2008

NOAA B-WET provides grants in support of locally relevant experiential learning through meaningful watershed educational experiences in the K-12 environment. The NOAA B-WET program has been highly successful in the three regions where it currently operates (Chesapeake Bay, California, and Hawaii) and may be expanding in 2008 to three new regions: Northeast, Gulf of Mexico, and the Pacific Northwest. Funded projects will involve meaningful watershed educational experiences addressing regional priorities. Annual project funding ranges from $50,000-$100,000. Proposals must be received by 5 p.m. on April 16, 2008.

NOTE: The deadline for applications is extended to 5:00 EST on April 18, 2008.

See the Federal Funding Opportunity (FFO) for details. The FFO is available from http://www.grants.gov (Funding Opportunity Number SEC-OED-2008-2001368).

***Please note that it is very important for potential applicants to register with Grants.gov ASAP. The opportunity will only be open for 30 days, and it can take several weeks to complete the registration process with Grants.gov***

Environmental Literacy Grants for K-12 Education Funding Opportunity Number: SEC-OED-2009-2001282

Last updated February 25, 2008

The solicitation for pre-proposals has now closed. NOAA's Office of Education (OED) is currently reviewing these pre-proposals for environmental literacy projects in support of K-12 education. Those selected to submit full applications will be contacted. Funded projects will be between 1 and 5 years in duration and will promote changes in K-12 education to expand the amount of Earth System Science taught in the classroom and improve student learning and application of that subject. Successful projects will catalyze change in K-12 education through development of new programs and materials and/or revision of existing programs and materials and/or by supporting transformative methods that expand or lead to the expansion of the use of Earth System Science in K-12 classrooms. Successful projects will not just increase knowledge of scientific phenomena but will also provide opportunities for the application of that knowledge to environmental issues relevant to the target audience. Projects are encouraged to incorporate NOAA data, data visualizations, and resources and to further the use of Earth System Science concepts related to NOAA's mission goals. Projects are also encouraged to collaborate with NOAA entities as partners and/or connect to projects previously funded by NOAA's Environmental Literacy Grants. A list of previously funded projects is available at http://www.oesd.noaa.gov/elg_projects.html. It is anticipated that final recommendations for funding under this announcement will be made by September 15, 2008, and that projects funded under this announcement will have a start date no earlier than November 1, 2008.

See the Federal Funding Opportunity (FFO) for details. The FFO is available from http://www.grants.gov (Funding Opportunity Number SEC-OED-2009-2001282).  You can also download a version of the FFO that contains additional formatting for increased readability in PDF format. Please read the FFO and visit our FAQ website http://www.oesd.noaa.gov/elg_faqs.html before contacting the Office of Education.

Full proposals will be only be accepted from those groups who are requested to submit them. These full proposals will be due Wednesday, June 25, 2008.

NOAA's Spherical Display Systems for Earth System Science - Installations and Content Development

Last updated November 20, 2007

This solicitation for applications has now closed. Applicants that did not pass the minimum requirements review will be contacted in December 2007. All other applicants will be contacted by February 2008. If you have any questions, please contact the Program Officer, Carrie McDougall at (202) 482 0875.

The goal of this program is to build environmental literacy among the general public through increased use of NOAA and NOAA-related data and data products in informal education institutions. See NOAA’s Education Plan for more details on this goal and strategy: http://www.oesd.noaa.gov/NOAA_Ed_Plan.pdf. It is anticipated that recommendations for funding under this announcement will be made by January 30, 2008 and that projects funded under this announcement will have a start date no earlier than April 30, 2008, and possibly as late as March 30, 2009.

See the Federal Funding Opportunity (FFO) for details. The FFO is available from www.grants.gov (Funding Opportunity Number SEC-OED-2008-2001089).  You can also download a version of the FFO that contains additional formatting for increased readability in Word format or PDF format.

Last updated September 26, 2006

We are pleased to announce the winners of this year's competition. Please click here for more information about the three successful proposals.

Overview of program:
In April 2006, NOAA's Office of Education (OEd) issued a request for applications from informal education institutions with interest in displaying NOAA’s Science On a Sphere. Awards will be made as one-year cooperative agreements and will be issued in FY06. Funded projects will support informal education institutions in incorporating this data visualization technology and compatible environmental data products into public exhibits. The goal of this program is to build environmental literacy among the general public through increased use of NOAA or NOAA-related data and data products in informal education institutions.

NOAA's Internal Education Funding Opportunity (Mini Grants)

Last updated January 30, 2008

Overview of program:
In FY06, $500,000 was available for the Education Mini Grant program which was used to fund eight projects. The response received from the NOAA community was tremendous with 138 proposal submitted over $7.6 M in requested funds. While this was extremely encouraging, it did mean the competition was very stiff and there were many worthwhile projects that we were not able to support. We would like to thank all of those who submitted proposals to the competition, it is wonderful to see how much interest there is within NOAA for education.

Please click here to view abstracts and final reports for the successful projects.
